MAXIMIZE YOUR AC EFFICIENCY: A FEW PRESEASON TIPS
The beginning of the cooling season is a good time to start thinking about how to maximize the efficiency of your AC system. Here are three simple ideas to help you:
- Check your system Step 1: During the first warm day, turn on your system to check that it’s working properly. It’s better to find out early in the cooling season about any problems with your A/C system — before those high-humidity, 90-degree days arrive.
- Handle the DIY tasks A couple do-it-yourself tasks can help you cut costs. EnergyStar recommends replacing your system filter once a month during the heavy-use summer months. A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you cool, which wastes energy.
- Manage your thermostat… If you can, turn it up. The Environmental Protection Agency notes that every degree increase in your AC’s temperature can reduce your electric bill by 7%. You should also avoid setting your thermostat at a colder setting than normal when you turn on your system, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That won’t cool your home any faster, but it could result in unnecessary expense.
