Propane Tankless Water Heater Myths

Propane tankless water heaters can provide homeowners with nearly limitless hot water. We’re debunking four myths about propane tankless water heaters.

MYTH 1: Tankless water heaters are too expensive.

The unfortunate reality with electric water heaters’ storage tank units is that they’re often inefficient, causing homeowners to run out of hot water occasionally, and may need to be replaced in about 10 years. Upgrading to a tankless water heater may initially cost more to replace than a storage unit, but the upgrade can easily save homeowners $200 to $250 annually, which can pay off the upgrade in three or four years.

MYTH 2:  Tankless requires natural gas.

Propane tankless water heaters offer the same features as those fueled by natural gas. They heat the water only when it’s needed. They do not suffer standby heat loss that occurs with storage tanks. Standby heat loss is due to water being constantly heated in the tank; energy can be wasted even when a hot water tap is not running.

MYTH 3: Tankless requires complicated venting.

Upgrading from an electric tank to a propane tankless water heater may require more planning, but high-efficiency units can be vented straight through the wall with inexpensive PVC pipe. Unlike traditional storage tank water heaters, propane tankless units do not need to be vented through the roof. Their combustion fan blows exhaust from the units horizontally. There are also vent options including pipe covers and termination points, so homeowners don’t need to worry about how venting will look in their home.

MYTH 4: Tankless won’t work with well water.

No matter the source of water for the home, propane tankless water heaters are still a great option. Homes with harder water or more usage will have more scale. Many modern tankless water heaters notify the homeowner when they need to be flushed. Homeowners can also use a water softener to reduce scale, lengthening intervals between flushing.
