Frequently Asked Questions - Bioheat

What is Bioheat?

A blend of heating oil and Biodiesel, a fuel made from biodegradable, organic materials like soybean oil. Bioheat blends between 5% (B5) and 20% (B20) are commonly used throughout the Northeast.

What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from a variety of by-products, including soybean oil, inedible corn oil, and canola oil, often sourced from grain and food processing. It’s a non-toxic, low carbon, environmentally friendly fuel compared to traditional diesel.

Will Bioheat cost more than regular heating oil?

No! Bioheat costs the same as traditional heating oil, offering an affordable, eco-friendly fuel.

QUESTIONS RELATING TO EQUIPMENT & BIOHEAT

Can I use Bioheat in my heating system?

Yes! All heating equipment manufacturers approve blends up to B20 (20% Biodiesel with 80% Heating Oil) for use in existing oil-fired heating systems without any modifications.

Will I need to drain my tank before I start to use it?

No, Bioheat blends seamlessly with the fuel already in your tank, so you’ll start experiencing the benefits of cleaner fuel from day one.

Will Bioheat affect the performance of my heating system?

Yes! But for the better! Bioheat burns cleaner than traditional heating oil, helping your system run more efficiently. It naturally removes carbon deposits and reduces buildup on internal components, which may lead to fewer fuel-related malfunctions over time.

Will B5 Bioheat clog my filter or cause my heater to stop working?

No, B5 Bioheat is designed to work seamlessly with your current heating system. Blends up to B20 do not require changes to your maintenance schedule, and you won’t experience unexpected filter clogs or equipment shutdowns. In fact, Bioheat can help reduce buildup on your heat exchanger, supporting more efficient performance over time.

Will I need extra maintenance or new filters with Bioheat?

No, not with standard blends like B5 or B20. These are fully compatible with your existing system and won’t increase the need for service.

QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE ENVIRONMENT & BIOHEAT

Is Bioheat better for the environment?

Absolutely! Bioheat significantly reduces carbon emissions and air pollutants compared to traditional heating oil. It’s an easy way to reduce your home’s carbon footprint without changing your heating system.

Does Bioheat work in cold weather?

Bioheat is designed to perform in all seasons, including the coldest winter months. Like traditional heating oil, we treat Bioheat with additives to ensure it flows smoothly, even in the coldest temperatures.

Will Bioheat blends separate or go bad if stored over the summer?

No — Bioheat blends, including those up to B20 (20% biodiesel, 80% traditional heating oil), are stable and won’t separate over time. Biodiesel and heating oil blend seamlessly and stay in suspension, meaning the fuel remains consistent and reliable even during extended storage, such as over the summer months.

Is Bioheat fuel stable for long-term storage?

Yes, Bioheat has a shelf life similar to traditional heating oil. In fact, biodiesel and heating oil have been successfully blended and used across the Northeast for over 20 years. You can confidently store Bioheat through warm-weather months without concerns about stability or separation.
