Mid-Winter Heating Season Checklist

The snow may have melted, but the heating season is far from over. Now is a great time to take a few steps to ensure savings, comfort, and peace of mind throughout the rest of the winter season.

  • Clean registers, baseboard heaters and radiators, making sure no heating outlets are blocked by furniture, carpet or drapery. When a vent is blocked, there is no free flow of air and your system has to work harder to pull air into the system and push it out. Not only can your HVAC system suffer damage, but furniture can be damaged if it is near vents for long periods of time.
  • Clean or replace any furnace filters to ensure systems are functioning at peak efficiency. The filter serves as a barrier, removing dust and allergens circulated through the air in your home. Over time, that dust and debris will clog a filter. A dirty filter makes your heating system work harder to move warm air effectively throughout your home.
  • Consider purchasing a programmable thermostat so you can better control your usage throughout the day. If you have a programmable thermostat, perform a “thermostat test” by programming your thermostat to turn on while you are testing it. You may need to set the temperature to 80 degrees for the test. If the heat doesn’t kick in, you may need to troubleshoot the issue to ensure your thermostat is functioning properly.
  • Use weather stripping on doors or windows. Make sure you have adequate insulation to keep your home warm and toasty. According to HomeAdvisor, in homes that have not been weatherized, air leaks can account for up to 30 to 40% of the home’s overall heat and cooling loss.

Another great way to trim your energy bills, extend the life of your system, and avoid costly breakdowns is to have a trained professional perform annual maintenance on your equipment. If you haven’t had a clean and tune performed during this heating season yet, it’s not too late.
